This website is a work in process toward a DipArch thesis project.

Whilst Buddhist monks across the world pray, and protest, against war and violence, cultures of society clash against one another in uproar and assault. Recent riots across the UK and Nottingham in 2011, is one such example of a clash of societies.

The riots initially started in London after the shooting of a local to Tottenham, by a police officer. After a flurry of media attention, a peaceful protest organised by the friends and family of the victim turned into a riot. In the subsequent days, more riots occurred across London and other parts of the UK, including Nottingham. The behaviour of many rioters has been linked with gang culture and mob mentalities. There were many contributing factors to the riots, including social exclusion, government cuts and poor police relations, but perhaps most worryingly, is the amount of criminal opportunism witnessed, aka recreational violence.

This thesis aims to find a response to such volatile behaviours in local Nottingham, introducing a new architectural reaction to helping those with problems and issues that contribute to criminal behaviour within the city. With inspiration from Buddhist rituals and way of life, and the material aspect of making and construction, this thesis hopes to evolve into a comprehensive and individual piece of architecture that aims to overhaul and 'repair' each individuals worries and anxieties that are at the root of such complications.
