Protocell Mesh project

The photography workshop focused on the theme of 'traces'. I chose to study the interaction of natural traces and the city. In some cases the city slowly loses itself, and nature successfully takes the lead in the constant push and shove between the two. In other cases, traces of nature are physically forced to accommodate to its surroundings by small and repetitive human interferences.

Photography Workshop; traces

The workshop showed me alternative ways to use the medium of photography in research. In previous projects, photography has been used purely as documentation, and little thought was put into the photograph as a research tool. From the workshop, I thus went back to previous images that I had taken within the strands of my research, and selected certain photographs that I could use as a research tool. These images are also shown below.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

On a trip to Cambodia, I visited Angkor Wat, a Buddhist Temple complex. Since starting this project, and using skills from the photography workshop, I looked back at the photographs and took a selection that I specifically chose to show the traces of 'ruin' of the temples. The site has been partially restored but there are many temples left to deterioration, and this ruin of Buddhist culture is what interests me within this thesis.
