PRECEDENTS

These precedents are a collection of work based on the research that I have undertaken with the themes of positive & negative space, living and non living, and decay and construction.

Roots. Roman Kirschner.

Roots is a dreamlike screen that is based on an old persian myth of a bush that sprouts heads. – In a green and brownish fluid iron crystals grow steadily...Bubbles ascend like jellyfish. Branches break off and sink to the dark ground. They start to dissolve and become thick clouds hovering over the scene.
The sculpture works in a cyclic way. Two thirds of the cycle it is active: a cystal object is growing and strechting in space which creates a more and more tense sound. The sculpture composes itself. The following passive dreamphase makes up one third of the cycle. The object dissolves and falls apart while the tension slowly fades. The cycle of growth and decay restarts on the ruins of the decomposition. One cycle lasts around 3 hours.
Electricity is pulsed through the whole Sculpture. It is the key to the constant transformation. Growth changes the flow of the current. The modified flow changes the growth. Software and Hardware leave the next step to the material. The voltages at each wire are put through a resonance filter and thus transformed into sound. The 4/4 pulse results in a sublime rhythm.

Saga. Inka Lindergård and Niclas Holmström.

The ‘saga’ series by the two photographers looks at the ‘unnaturally natural’ and unique interaction between nature and man made implements. Evidently the materials are entirely natural, but here I am interested in how the natural environment can produce such powerful and almost seemingly artificial landscapes. the beauty of the two images shown below showcase the intimidation and ‘invincibility’ of nature, compared to our almost ‘feeble’ attempts at producing anything as long-standing and authoritative.

Current. Beili Liu.

Installation I Current, Salt, water, carbon powder, glass, hardware, string, dimensions various, (globe 5"x5"x5"). 10 glass globes filled with a mixture of salt, water, and carbon powder. Salt crystal grows along the globe surface while water evaporates. Salt is white, carbon is black, water is clear, water dissolves salt, carbon traces rupture and drift. The materials perform a subtle and gradual change through time.

Go. Beili Liu.

Installation I GO #1, Salt, water, shotgun shell, 6'x6'x4". GO, “the Game of Encirclement”, or “Enclosing Game”, is an ancient Chinese game of territory control. The game is played with black and white stones on a 19 × 19 line grid.

Based on the game, the installation is created with 361 black shotgun shells laid out in a grid. Salt water fills each shell. Over time, crystal grows and creeps over the rim of each shotgun shell, and the color of the grid gradually shifts from the original to its opposing.

Exothermic/Endothermic Transference. Marissa Lee Benedict

Exothermic/Endothermic Transference I is a study in reactive material pairings. The piece pairs exothermic material reactions - reactions which produce heat and energy when they are combined - with endothermic material mixtures - mixtures which need to absorb heat and energy to transform. The exothermic reactions (carbon foam/ plastic foam) are stabilized while the endothermic reaction (fat/wax) continues to slowly melt, existing in a state of perpetual transformation throughout the duration of the sculpture's life.
