I see the Wian Tian ritual as the original inspiration and push into my thesis project.

My interest in Buddhism stems from an initial interest in the interaction between architecture and religion. On a recent trip to Bali, I visited Buddhist temples and monasteries. Research into Buddhist worshippers, and Buddhist monks, revealed different facets of a serene yet focused way of life that has been somewhat lost in westernised cultures. Wian Tian is a representation of this, in that a ritual taken part by Buddhists worldwide is carried out with focus and composure.

Wian Tian, or Candlelit Ceremony, is a Buddhist ritual that occurs on Magha Puja day, and Vesakha Puja day. It consists of three clockwise circumnavigations of the Temple, where each circumnavigation represents one of three essential parts of Buddhism known as the Three Gems;

  1) The Buddha
  2) The Dhamma (teachings of Buddha)
  3) The Sangha (disciples who teach the Dhamma)

Flowers, incense and a lighted candle are held by worshippers. Everyone is welcome to join in with the procession.
